Hello, my name is Arletta Stewart and I am the club sponsor this year. I am a teacher at Cache High School. I teach US History, Economics, Personal Finance, Accounting, and sometimes Business Law. My room is 122 on the west side near the cafeteria.
The purpose of this club will be to support the various academic competitions throughout the year and to help with the academic awards dinner in May.
At the beginning of this year we will start practicing for the Academic Bowl competitions. Practices will be after school. I will post a schedule on my door for practice dates. Everyone is invited to tryout. Only 4 people can play at a time and we usually take about 12 people to the competitions. Who gets to go will depend on how many practices you attend, and how well you do at practice.
In the Fall, we go to academic competitions held by a few of the local colleges. We currently go to Cameron University and Southwestern University. I am always looking for a new competition to attend, so there may be more this year.
Students go and take a "test" developed by different departments in the college on different subjects. The students are then rated based on their score. Cameron rates the top 5 and Southwestern rates the top 3. The colleges awards the individual students on their placement and it also awards the high schools based on how well their students do as a whole. The last few years we have done very well at these competitions. Cache placed 1st overall at Southwestern and 2nd at Cameron. We were up against the bigger schools at Cameron, and Eisenhower beat us.
I encourage all students who are interested in any of the competitions to join the Academic Club. If you are only interested in doing the college competitions, the earlier you let me know the more I can help you prepare. If I don't get students asking to compete, I usually ask the teacher who teaches that subject for names. This doesn't work if I don't get the dedication from that student. This is a competition just like any other, and the more dedicated the student is the better the results are.
Last year, we had a pizza party and gave out awards. We gave out 82 individual awards. This year, I would like to have a BBQ dinner. This is were the Academic Club will come in to play. We will have a fundraiser to pay for the dinner and awards. Everyone who worked on the fundraiser will be able to attend the dinner whether they placed or not. Also, the members would be expected to help set up for the dinner and clean up after. (last year my family did it all)
